Both co-organizing entities, GIN-SSOGIE and IFED have been very active in highlighting the reality of diverse family models around the world. GIN-SSOGIE’s regional seminars on “Family and Traditional Values” out of which have come the Johannesburg declaration , Silom Manifesto and Sao Leopoldo declaration have demonstrated that a wide range of actors in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America recognize the value of family as a locus of care, relationships, and participation, particularly for the most vulnerable individuals. These actors also recognize that all individuals must be heard and respected within their family unit. Moreover, they recognize the multiplicity of family models today, throughout History, religions and faith traditions, and indigenous cultures. Since its humble beginnings in 2012, the International Family Equality Day (IFED) has grown into a worldwide movement that nowadays is being held in more than 110 cities in over 50 countries. It has also been recognized and supported by countless institutions and organizations, with the Council of Europe calling it “an important tool to promote a tolerant and cohesive society”.
Our message
We believe that all future Resolutions on the Protection of the Family, as well as any official UN documents, must continue to recognise the multiple forms of family models.
